The initials MPS stand for Milieu Programma Sierteelt, which means Floriculture Environmental Program. It is a non-profit organization, founded in Holland in 1995 by growers who were concerned about consumer opinions regarding the impact of growing on the environment.

MPS is much more than an environmental certification program.  It is a database of information, entered by each grower member from around the world, measuring their use of 5 inputs: energy, water, waste, crop protection agents (insecticides, fungicides, etc.) and fertilizers. Growers are compared to other growers in similar environmental zones (climates), growing similar crops.  Thus growers get a score 4 times a year, and charts and graph to help them understand how they compare. MPS then becomes a management tool for growers to study and decide what they want to do to improve their score, which means possibly using fewer or less toxic crop protection agents, fertilizers, and less water and energy.
